Dallas Horseshoe Project
(Margaret McDermott Bridge/IH-30/IH-35) Opening Summer 2017
The Horseshoe Project is managed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and it will upgrade bridges that cross the Trinity River at IH-30 and I-35E as well as update the route geometry for connecting roadways where they all converge near downtown Dallas' Central Business District. On Saturday, August 22, 2015, TxDOT contractor American Bridge placed the center steel segment for the westbound arch. This exciting addition to the Dallas skyline is exciting not only because of its aesthetic quality but because it marks substantial progress for the project.
Interesting Facts about the Margaret McDermott Bridge
- The IH-30 bridge structure over the Trinity River was officially named the Margaret McDermott Bridge by the State of Texas via H.B. 1947, effective September 1, 2007.
- The signature elements designed by Santiago Calatrava comprised of two 18-foot pedestrian and bicycle bridge structures.
- Calatrava is also the architect for the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge which opened in 2012.
- Each pedestrian and bicycle bridge is supported by a steel arch that rises up to 274 feet above the bridge deck.
- Each bridge deck is 1,125 feet in length.
- Each arch will have 98 cables connecting the bridge deck to the arch above it, an array of 49 cables coming down on either side of the bridge deck.
What’s Next?
- The eastbound arch installation was completed on August 22, 2015.
- Cable installation for the eastbound arch begins fall 2015 and will continue into summer 2016.
- Steel segments for the westbound arch will begin arriving late 2015/early 2016.

The Margaret McDermott Bridge is named after the philanthropist and wife of the founder of Texas Instruments. She was the first person to make a personal contribution that ensured Dallas' ability to secure Santiago Calatrava as the designer to meld architectural beauty with functionality for bridges over the Trinity River. The City of Dallas has worked with TxDOT, legislatures, the region to make this funding a priority.
For the IH-30 Bridge, the signature addition that will result in the Margaret McDermott Bridge features pedestrian and bicycle access in and around downtown, the floodway and Oak Cliff.

Texas Department of Transportation - Horseshoe Project
Progress Update
American Bridge is the contractor for erecting the steel arches and bridges working on the Horseshoe Project. The steel is being fabricated in Tampa, Florida at Tampa Steel Erecting Company, Florida's oldest steel company.
The progress report shows the center segments for one of the arches. When completed, the bicycle and pedestrian arches/bridges are 1,125' in length and 286' at their tallest point. Each steel segment is approximately 40' in length. The steel is expected to begin arriving on the project site late 2014.
